Best Philippine stocks with highest gains

Updated by

Which of the Philippines’ largest companies whose stocks had the best year in terms of valuation? And the opposite, which of them have posted negative returns?

These are the questions that this article is going to answer. We will look at the one-year ROI of company shares being traded on the Philippine Stocks Exchange or PSE.

Not only we are going to discuss on how much they’ve gained on the basis of their stocks, but also on the dividends they’ve distributed to shareholders.

Best stocks in the Philippines

So how do we determine the best stocks? We know that stocks provide earnings through price appreciation and dividends.

Thus, we will be looking at how much change their prices underwent for one year and the total dividends they gave away.

See the table below for the best company stocks in the country. To understand the data, here are some of the pointers. Data is updated as of February 21, 2021.

  • Name stands for the name of the corporation.
  • Ticker is the stock symbol as seen on the Philippine Stock Exchange and retail trading portals.
  • % represents the change of the stock price for a year, ending on the last trading day of 2020.
  • Total ROI takes into account both the stock price change and dividends issued, if there are any. For more discussions, you can read the Philippine companies with the highest dividends and blue chip stocks with the highest dividends.
  • Companies whose shares are suspended may be not appear on the list in the table below.
  • These are historical data. Past performance does not guarantee similar returns will happen in the future.

As you can see, the top 10 company stocks posted triple-digit returns. These are:

  1. AC Energy Corporation (power)
  2. Premiere Horizon Alliance Corporation (holdings)
  3. Apollo Global Capital Inc. (technology)
  4. MRC Allied, Inc. (property)
  5. NiHAO Mineral Resources International, Inc. (mining)
  6. DITO CME Holdings Corp. (telecom)
  7. Benguet Corporation (mining)
  8. Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corporation (mining)
  9. MerryMart Consumer Corp. (retail)
  10. COL Financial Group, Inc. (brokerage).

In fact, AC Energy’s shares rose by 268.88%. If you’ve put in a million pesos, that money would have been worth ₱3,649,454 including dividends and net of charges, fees, and taxes by the end of 2020.

In summary, 71 posted in excess of 10% return on investment. There are a total of 121 gainers, 3 have remain unchanged, and 129 who have reported negative returns to their shareholders.

One interesting bit is that there are companies in the list above that still give positive gains despite the fact that their share prices plummeted. Central Azucarera de Tarlac, Inc. for instance gave out dividend yield of 24.73%, which more than lifted up its unfavorable valuation.

Two other similar companies share the same growth story: China Banking Corporation and Phinma Corporation.

How to invest in Philippine companies?

Now that you’ve seen the potential income from stock investing, you might regret that you haven’t started sooner. Or your interest is piqued, and you’d like to know exactly how you can buy these shares and sell them off with profit.

These companies are all publicly-listed corporations. Meaning, their shares are available to be acquired or sold at a certain price at the Philippine Stock Exchange, the country’s marketplace for corporate shares.

The first thing you’re going to do is to open an account with a stock brokerage company. It is going to provide you with a trading portal where you can see all available stocks and a way to buy or sell them.

For more discussions, you can read this article on how to buy Philippine stocks by investing in the stock market. You can also observe the expert-recommended 8,000-rule to maximize your profit.

Take note however that just because you bought a stock, it is going to give you the spectacular gains that you see on the table.

That’s why some may pick blue chip stocks, which are companies that are relatively well-known and demonstrated arguably performance through tough times.

You can also choose a real investment trust fund or REIT, preferred shares, etc. Still some might find it easier to look at fundamental values of the business, so here are some resources on P/E ratio, shareholder’s equity, and list of stock market and investment blogs.
